North Shore University Hospital Unveils $560 Million Surgical Pavilion

The Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion, a new 288,000-square-foot tower, has been completed at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH), a Level I trauma center and quaternary care teaching hospital owned by Northwell Health, one of the largest healthcare providers in New York State. The $560 million facility is expected to enhance the hospital's cardiac, neurosurgery, and transplant programs.

Features and Benefits of New North Shore Surgical Pavilion

The new pavilion boasts 18 operating rooms, including three hybrid rooms equipped with advanced imaging technology, as well as 132 intensive care rooms. These state-of-the-art facilities will allow for highly complex and advanced surgical procedures, while also upgrading and expanding the hospital's critical care capabilities.

The Petrocelli Pavilion will also serve as the new home for the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital, featuring a dedicated concierge entrance for cardiac patients and their families. In 2022, the cardiac program at NSUH recorded impressive statistics, including 660,000 ambulatory visits, 38,000 inpatient discharges, and numerous specialized procedures.

Donor Support and Recognition

The construction of the Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion was made possible through the generous support of various donors, notably Attilio and Beverly Petrocelli, who have been long-time supporters of Northwell Health's development projects and programs at NSUH and Cohen Children's Medical Center.

Serving the Community

NSUH, with its 756 licensed beds, treats more than 90,000 patients annually. Approximately 40% of its patients come from Queens, while another 5% travel over 100 miles to seek care at the hospital. The new surgical pavilion is expected to significantly enhance the hospital's ability to serve the healthcare needs of the community.

National Recognition

NSUH has received numerous accolades for its excellence in patient care. In 2023, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services awarded the hospital its highest 5-star rating, while U.S. News & World Report ranked it as the top hospital in New York State and among the top 22 nationally. The hospital's cardiac program has also been recognized as one of America's 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery by Healthgrades.

Heart Transplant

Expanding Transplant Services

The Northwell Health Transplant Institute at NSUH, which features Long Island's only heart, liver, and lung transplant programs, has achieved significant milestones in recent years. The liver transplant program completed its 150th procedure since its inception in 2019, while the heart transplant program celebrated its 100th transplant since 2018. The addition of the lung transplant program in 2022 has further expanded access to critical care for thousands of New Yorkers who would otherwise have to travel to Manhattan for treatment.
